Granny Guidelines

Have you made your mum a grandmother?

Perhaps having kids isn't on the horizon this year, but it's on your radar for the next few?

Or maybe you're reading this as you're preparing to become a grandparent yourself?

I listened to a fascinating Woman's Hour interview with a psychologist who has done us all a massive favour

Terri Apter has written the first book, based on research and case studies from across the world, as well as her own experience as a grandparent, giving guidance on navigating this huge transition

Rightly, there's so many informative, evidence-based books on preparing for parenthood, but almost nothing to help both generations navigate this new dynamic.

From giving advice on navigating your in-laws as you raise your own family, to tips for grandparents supporting their grandchild through their parents’ divorce, it feels long overdue.

Of course, each experience is unique and either by choice or circumstance, lots of new mothers don't have the support of their own or their partner's parents.

But I found her discussion of the three modern Granny 'personas' that she's identified in her book particularly fascinating...

I'll leave you to reflect on whether any of those personas resonate with your experience 😉

Carbs & kisses,

NB xx
