'I want to work out without judgement': Why more are turning to women-only gyms

Unwanted attention, mansplaining, intimidation or lewd comments are just some of the reasons that women are looking for alternative places to train

Nancy Best, personal trainer and founder of Ladies Who Crunch, thinks it an issue across women’s fitness as a whole: “Wrongly, female fitness is allowed to be more expensive. Women are constantly being told to change the way they look and they command a higher price because the marketing is almost like it’s an insider’s secret or magic solution to looking amazing.”

“Women, especially menopausal women, need strength training more than ever. I don’t think creating these exclusive gyms where the price is much higher is right,” That said, she thinks they’re fair: “I think women who can come to a space where they are building relationships with women who share their values is really powerful. Creating these safe spaces where women can make connections is a really positive thing.”
